With the release of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, millions of players are leveling to 80. To get past the first few levels, however, a choice must be made; Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord? In this article, lead content manager Strands will be looking at which is the best choice, and the differences between the two zones. We hope you find the guide informative and useful when you make your choice.
I’m going to be going over some of the main points one looks for when they choose a zone to level, and for each, I will compare the two zones to help you make the best choice. First, however, here’s an interesting fact; if, say, you finish off Howling Fjord at level 71, then get up to 79, you can return to Borean Tundra (or Howling Fjord, if you mastered the tundra at the beginning) and you will get the full level 79-worthy EXP rewards from the quests, which will by then be extremely easy to complete.
- Quest Rewards
While there are decent rewards from each zone, the Borean Tundra contains the best rewards for quests, and has many more available. More base experience is given per quest in the tundra than the Howling Fjord, and the quests themselves are more interesting. A con for this, however, would be that, since getting to the tundra is more convenient for both factions than reaching the Howling Fjord, it will have a higher population, and the chances of having your attempts at beating this quest or that monster broken by some rogue creeping out of the shadows and owning you are quite a bit higher.
- Look and Feel
This depends a lot on your personal taste, though myself, I would say that the Borean Tundra looks quite boring and dull, not nearly as exciting as the Howling Fjord, which is a beautiful and wonderous area full of surprises. If you are concentrating on having a better time questing, with lots of lore along the way, rather than getting it out of the way quickly, I would recommend the Howling Fjord.
To summarize, I would go for the Borean Tundra because I would like to progress quickly (after being left in the early raids due to lack of gear in the Burning Crusade, doh). If I was taking it slow and steady, however, and I was paying more attention to the lore (which, being a roleplayer, I really should be doing) I would definitely head over to the Howling Fjord. At the end of the day, it isn’t going to make much of a difference, as you get out of there a few levels into the 70’s, but it’s always nice to get that little boost, isn’t it?
I hope you’ve enjoyed the post. Good luck in Wrath of the Lich King!
